Perfect Start at Mets Season Opener

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Did you know the Mets have the best opening day win percentage in baseball? If you did not, it is true, the Mets have gone 30-17 for an opening day winning percentage of .638… that’s the best in the league.

Baseball has finally started and we are 1-0, defeating Cincinnati 2 to 1 in what was a cleanly played and reassuring game at Great American Ball Park. Can we keep the streak alive? 2-0 ? 5-0 ?? 10-0 ??? Only time will tell, but the Amazins showed much promise, especially in the bullpen. There was much preseason chatter on the health of Mets ace Johan Santana’s elbow. All negative reports (including the potential for an MRI) seem to have been premature and speculative. Santana practiced and played throughout preseason and frustrated eager batters for the Reds this Monday at the season opener.

Johan Santana.. What determination on that face!

With seven strike outs and one earned run over 5.2 innings, Santana has begun paying dividends on his groundbreaking 137.5 (guaranteed) million dollar contract which extends until 2013 with an option for 2014. Lets all pray now that Johan doesn’t turn into a Rick DiPietro, the New York Islanders goalie who signed a record 67.5 million dollar 15 year contract only to play a hand full of games since a string of injuries beginning in March of 08′.

More hope came from J.J. Putz, Sean Green and Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez (K-Rod) who recorded his first save with the Metropolitans. Combined, they pitched for 3 and change no-hit innings to protect the lead and secure this seasons first win.

Offensively, Daniel Murphy led the way with a solo home run off of Aaron Harang who started for the Reds to get the Mets on the board. Later on in the sixth, Murphy drove in a run on a ground out to take the lead. On the negative, we left a staggering 12 runners on base. However, being it the first game I will not harp on the subject and hope it will not be a trend.

I could not ask for anything more at this point. We had a solid start and recorded our first W on the season. I mean things could have been much worse, just ask the Philies and Pinstripes about their splendid opening day performances!

Tigers Drop Mets, 7-2

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

The Mets fell to the Tigers on Saturday in Lakeland, FL, by a 7-2 final. Angel Pagan was one of the few bright spots for the Amazins, reaching base 3 times, stealing a base, and scoring one of their runs. The 27 year old switch hitting outfielder appears to be a long shot to make the club, despite having some success last year before he injured his left shoulder. Pagan faces competition from Cory Sullivan and Jeremy Reed - whom the Mets acquired in the J.J. Putz trade - among others. David Lennon actually thinks Pagan is the favorite for the fifth outfield spot, although - as much as I like Pagan and his strength from the right side of the plate - it’s hard to get too worked up over the battle to be the #5 outfielder.

Not to get into the whole Santana/WBC thing again (ref our thoughts on Marty Noble’s report), but it was interesting to note in Bart Hubbuch’s Mets blog that JS does not agree with pitching coach Dan Warthen’s assertion that prepping for the WBC was the cause of the lefty’s sore elbow… in fact, Santana believes it was Warthen’s “aggressive schedule” that led to the soreness. Personally, I think it’s time for Warthen to shut his pie hole. First, it doesn’t matter what caused the injury, until and unless that plays some role in getting the Met ace healthy. Second, Warthen’s own words - “speculation” jumps out - suggests that he doesn’t have anything concrete to offer to support his claim. Third and most importantly, there are 135+ (as in $MM) reasons the Mets are going to side with Santana over the coach.

Santana Pushed Back Again

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

So Johan Santana will not make his first spring training start on Tuesday as previously reported… The Post’s Bart Hubbuch reports the Mets ace will be pushed back “a minimum of several days”, although manager Jerry Manuel told reporters he is “not concerned with it at all”, referring to the tightness the pitcher has reported in his triceps tendon.

Painting a slightly gloomier picture is MLB.com’s Marty Noble, who thinks Santana could be held out for two more weeks or more… possibly pushing his first Grapefruit League start back beyond March 10th. Worse, there is the suggestion that such a delay could jeopardize the southpaw’s availability to start the Mets opener on April 6th in Cincinnati, a prospect which Noble says “already appears to be in question”. Beyond all that, Noble’s suggestion that Santana’s elbow soreness is due to his efforts to prepare to play for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic is moot and strikes me as an attempt to grab some headlines. Think “Hugo Chavez and Johan Santana Conspire to Sabotage Mets Season” or something to that effect.

Says Noble of Santana, “his love for his country may be cause of the genesis of the problem.” How a man’s patriotism can be some kind of negative is beyond me. (How a veteran writer could pen a phrase like ’cause of the genesis of the problem’ boggles the mind.) That Noble attributes the idea to Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen - “Patriotism could be the reason, pitching coach Dan Warthen said” makes it no more newsworthy or appropriate a topic at this stage of the game. If Warthen really floated the idea that Santana pushed himself “too hard” for the WBC, then he ought to get reamed by Jerry Manuel and the Mets front office, not to mention Santana’s agent. I mean, what good does that do at this point? Maybe Team Steinbrenner has commissioned Noble to try to deflect some media attention away from the train wreck that is A-Roid and the Yankees? Regardless, Noble should be able to come up with a better use of electrons.

Personally, I think Marty needs to take a chill. Barring a catastrophic injury to two or more of the Metsies stars (Santana, Reyes, Wright, Beltran, etc.), the Mets are the clear favorite to win the East… look no further than the improved bullpen that was discussed on citifieldblog.com yesterday. If Santana doesn’t start on Opening Day, so be it. What matters is that he gets healthy, even if that means he misses one or two starts.

Amazins Face Cards; Santana’s Health?

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Jerry Manuel’s club hosts the Redbirds in Grapefruit League play this afternoon, fresh off a 9-0 pounding of the Marlins. But while there is a healthy buzz about the team’s offense, it’s the arm of ace Johan Santana that has people concerned. Joel Sherman writes that the Mets can’t afford to lose Santana (jeez I could have written that! Can I write for the Post too?)… while at the same time pointing out that “He has started at least 33 games in each of the last five seasons” and has the highest number of innings pitched over that span - thereby suggesting that Santana will be ready to answer the bell on Opening Day… Bart Hubbuch writes that the current plan is to have Santana make his spring training debut Tuesday at St. Lucie when the Cardinals will be back in town… David Lennon notes that Santana “pitched through” some elbow discomfort last season - a season during which he sported a Cy Young-worthy and NL low 2.53 ERA.
